These are the two great crossover epics of all time for Marvle and DC. Both stories are masterfully written. Jim Shooter, Marv Wolfman, and George Perez are comic gids on par with Stan Lee, Bob Kane, and Seigal & Shuster. As much as I love the epic that is COIE it was Secret Wars that got me hooked so hardcore into comics. I own both in TBP though I'm not sure where my COIE is. Both of these stories still stand up today. As much as I love Infinite Crisis it is no COIE. Don't even get me started on the last few Marvel epics. Bendis isn't worthy to carry Shooters keyboard.

I prefer Secret Wars to Crisis because I prefer Marvel superhero canon over DC superhero canon. I am of the opinion that Crisis made alot of the DC universe better, but in some cases it made it much worse. What they did to Jonah Hex post crisis was awful.
I agree that each does represent their companies finest mass crossover work. That isn't exactly a hard mark to come by though, as most all the ones after these two were not very good at all. Those type of epic stories are hard to write and generally end up being a disappointment.
Kingdom Come was pretty good, as was Marvels and it's counterpart Ruins.

I prefered Secret Wars at the time. I am more of a DC fan now but the Marvel stuff back in the 80's is gold. I am looking forward to a few of Marvel's new projects but for me for now DC is where it is at.

I have to say that I prefer Crisis. While Secret Wars was very well done, the scope and boldness of Crisis surpassed it. I think Crisis was a better written story as well. While Secret Wars made a ripple in Marvel, Crisis was a rebirth in DC, mostly for the better.

Dang it, Spidey whipped the X-Men in Secret Wars....you know in your heart that alone makes it superior.

Spidey not only whipped the X-Men but he owned Titania who had taken down She-Hulk.

This discussion has inspired me to take out my Secret Wars and reread them. I read 1-5 last night. Great stuff, beautiful Mike Zeck art, great Jim Shooter writing, and the X-Men getting trashed by everyone they go up against.

The difference was Secret Wars was years ahead of its tome and Crisis was decades ahead of its time. Both still stand very strong today.
