I'm kind of a picky reader and know some others may be to. I would like to see what others are reading and what they suggest.
Some of my favorites are: A song of fire and Ice by R.R. Martin. The first few books have some of the best political intrigue I have ever read. He has some of the most realistic characters as well. It is fantasy genre, but just hints at magic.
A second series that started off great is the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. He is not as talented as Martin, but creates an interesting new world with a different take on magic. The first 5 books are so are a very good read, but the last few have became preachy, and he turns a likable main character into an almost despisable character.
I also enjoy most of Greenwoods Elminster books, though the last one with his daughter was lackluster.
For Sci-fi the Foundation Triology, and the Robot series by Asimov are fantastic especially considering when he first wrote the earlier books.

As far as fantasy lit goes I have to recomend The Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends series. Weis and Hickman give us some of my favorite fantasy characters there. Though I loathe Krynn as a campaign setting, it has always been home to some of my favorite heroes and villians.

I read a fair amount and the best I've read lately are by David Eddings.
The Elenium trilogy which has these 3 books.
The Diamond Throne The Ruby Knight The Sapphire Rose
The Tamuli trilogy which continues from those 3.
Domes of Fire The Shining Ones The Hidden City
I have just started The Hidden City.
I also really liked the Kushiel trilogy by Carey, the LonTobyn trilogy by Coe, what I have read so far of the Winds of the Forlands series by Coe and The Runelords series by David Farland has also been great so far. They are making it into a movie pretty soon from what I hear.

On the SciFi front I have to recomend, and I know Whiskey will agree, Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades.
