In my opinion you need to have as much RAM as you can afford. You can make up for a slower CPU with lots of RAM but you can never pick up the slack from lack of RAM. For a new box I would aim for 512 Megs, but with chip prices today I would advice a full on Gig, especially with the HT available via Win XP. If you are running Linux of some sort, get a full Gig to start off with, Linux is only truly affective when it has space to breath when multi-threading.

With most who visit the board 512 is the minimum I would recommend, but as Wong stated, for serious gamers, 2 gig is preferable with the graphic intensive games on the market.

I'm running 1 gig, didn't have the cash at the time to go with 2 gigs. Seeing that I dropped about 1500 into an upgrade.
Anyone play Half-life 2?
