Older Sci-Fi book by Mike Resnick and I can't believe I've never heard it before.
Basically a series of short stories starting about the 29th or 30th century after man creates and maintains working hyperdrives. The book is broken up into sections demarcated by the type of government we have-Republic, Democracy, Oligarchy, Monarchy, and finally Anarchy before we become extinct some 500 or so millenia from now, although the novel only covers for a few thousand of these years with the end being set far far in the future(like B-5).
We are the big boys on the block and we expand mercilessly into space. The first few chapters we hit other cultures over the head with a big stick and humans are the privileged culture. Interestingly, though this approach is only covered thoroughout the first few stories as man finds out we went too far too fast and have to rely on trickery to maintain outright control. Some cultures we use diplomatic client states to turn against another so we can use our military elsewhere. Some we use economic warfare against(think Trade Wars) and make them reliant on us for their entire civilization.
Good shit.

I have not read this one but a great book by Resnick is called Redbeard about a barbarian slammed smack dab in the middle of the future. He has wrote a lot of great stuff, there are like 30 of the Birthright Universe books. I believe I will start on them......now.
